Every capitalist epoch presents distinct struggles for health, social justice, and access to health care. The onset of this decade has been characterised by growing health and health care disparities. In addition to having increased the class divide in accessing health services, healthcare, and vaccines worldwide, the COVID-19 pandemic illustrates the global public health crisis within the context of a planetary health emergency. Both have been propelled by a cynical economic system that prioritizes profit-making at the detriment of planetary needs. Furthermore, ongoing conflicts and wars over resources – which exacerbate nationalism amidst an increasingly unstable climate – continue to shape the political economy of health worldwide.

Human engagement with the planet is imperative for understanding and strengthening public health and health care systems against future threats.

Within the above context, the 19th IAHPE Conference will focus on looking forward to preparing for future public health challenges, addressing the following themes, but not exclusively:

  • Health care inequities and the struggle for health.
  • Planetary health, climate change, and health.
  • War and conflict and health.
  • Migration, forced migration, and health.
  • Universal health care and health services privatization.
  • Access and distribution of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
  • Academic freedom and commodification of public health education.
  • Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and public health preparedness
  • Challenges and opportunities for public health.
  • Social movements, solidarity, and public health activism.

Vicente Navarro: The predictable resurgence of Fascism and Nazism on both sides of the North Atlantic and its consequences

THE ORIGIN OF FASCISM AND NAZISM: THE GREAT DEPRESSION

Fascism and Nazism were the product of the Great Depression. The enormous deterioration of the economic situation, which had a very negative effect on the quality of life and well-being of the popular classes, created a severe problem with the credibility and legitimacy of the democratic systems and governments. Fascism (in southern Europe and the US) and Nazism (in central and northern Europe and also in the US) capitalized on this discontent, which grew substantially in the pre-World War II period. They bothacquire significant influence on both sides of the North Atlantic, governing several countries of Western Europe.

Detainment of Prof Dr Şebnem Korur Fincancı is unacceptable!

Dr Şebnem Korur Fincancı, respected scientist and forensic medicine specialist, and elected president of Turkish Medical Association (TMA) was detained for a statement she made to the press and accused of making terrorist propaganda.

Dr Financi is a member of Forensic Science Society (England), Académie Internationale de Médecine Légale et de Médecine Sociale, International Academy of Legal Medicine, New York Academy of Sciences, and has been an indomitable human rights defender for decades. She is one of the founding members of Human Rights Foundation of Turkey.

The Turkish Medical Association is the constitutional professional organization of more than one hundred thousand physicians in Turkey. The government made an application to the court to remove Dr Financi from the TMA presidency. This is an attack not only against her personal and professional freedom of expression but also towards the organization of physicians in Turkey and professional autonomy of physicians. Her detainment and attempt to remove her from her elected position in TMA are illegal and unacceptable.

19th IAHPE Conference: Capitalism,Pandemics, and Public Health (21-24 September 2023, Thessaloniki, Greece)

Every capitalist epoch has its own characteristics of struggles for health, social justice, and access to health care. The beginning of the decade has been over-shadowed by increased and exaggerated inequities and inequalities of peoples’ health and access to healthcare worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic deep-ened the class divide of access to health, healthcare, and vaccines all over the world. COVID-19 pandemic is an example of a global public health crisis within a planetary health emergency driven by a cynical economic system prioritizing profit making at the expense of planetary needs.

Human engagement with the planet needs to be addressed to understand and prepare public health and healthcare systems for future threats. Ongoing conflicts and wars over resources, triggering nationalism in an increasingly unstable climate, will continue to shape the political economy of health worldwide.

Within the above context, the 19th IAHPE conference will focus on looking forward to preparing for future public health challenges, addressing the following themes, but not exclusively:

• Health care inequities and the struggle for health.
• Planetary health, climate change and health.
• War and conflict and health.
• Migration, forced migration and public health.
• Universal health care and health services’ privatization.
• Access and distribution of vaccines and pharmaceuticals.
• Academic freedom and commodification of public health education.
• Lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic and public health preparedness.
• Challenges and opportunities for public health.
• Social movements, solidarity, and public health activism.
