It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing away of our comrade Prof Sebastiao Loureiro, foundator of the Instituto de Saúde Coletiva da Universidade Federal da Bahia (ISC/UFBA).
Sebastião Antônio Loureiro de Souza e Silva was a physician with a sound formation in Public Health [MSc in Tropical Public Health in London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine] and PhD in Epidemiology in the Texas University].
Sebastiao combined an outstanding academic career with his dedication in the cause of people’s health. He was a pioneer of the movement of Collective Health [Saude Colective] and one of the leaders and presidents of ABRASCO [Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva]. Intensively active in the international setting of social medicine and public health, Sebastiao has been a key person in international collaboration of academics and activists committed to promote health of the populations as a social right. Under this commitment he has served as leader and president of both ALAMES [ASOCIACIÓN LATINOAMERICANA DE MEDICINA SOCIAL Y SALUD COLECTIVA] and IAHP [International Association of Health Policy] .
We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends and promise that we will try to continue the struggle that he has inspired all of us with his exemplary life.
