IAHP honouring the late Sebastião Antônio Loureiro de Souza e Silva

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing away of our comrade Prof Sebastiao Loureiro, foundator of the  Instituto de Saúde Coletiva da Universidade Federal da Bahia (ISC/UFBA).

Sebastião Antônio Loureiro de Souza e Silva was a physician with a sound formation in Public Health [MSc in Tropical Public Health in London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine] and PhD in Epidemiology in the Texas University].

Sebastiao combined an outstanding academic career with his dedication in the cause of people’s health. He was a pioneer of the  movement of Collective Health [Saude Colective] and one of the leaders and  presidents of ABRASCO [Associação Brasileira de Saúde Coletiva]. Intensively active in the international setting of social medicine and public health, Sebastiao has been a key person in international collaboration of academics and activists committed to promote health of the populations as a social right.  Under this commitment he has served as leader and president of both ALAMES [ASOCIACIÓN LATINOAMERICANA DE MEDICINA SOCIAL Y SALUD COLECTIVA] and IAHP [International Association of Health Policy] .

We express our deepest condolences to his family and friends and promise that we will try to continue the struggle that he has inspired all of us with his exemplary life.
